In 2017, Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi as well as Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it became the most-streamed song in just 6 months. When Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, well-known artists started to work with reggaeton artists. Drake and Bad Bunny have collaborated to record MIA (2018) and Madonna and Maluma were on the same track in Medellin and Medellin in 2019 In 2020, several Reggaeton artists were complaining about how the genre was moving towards mainstream. In contrast, a young generation, Rauw Alejandro wanted to push forward the progression. The genre often included elements of electronic dance music as well as other types.
